My guilty pleasure is chips and guac. Yours, too? We are the same! I just knew it! Even on a day like today, where it's 20, 30... 40* below zero, I'm going to have some this afternoon. It's such a nice winter day pick-me-up. Who wants to join me? But I have to warn you about something. Something weird. If we ever happen to sharing a bowl of guac... get ready.

I like to put raw apple cider vinegar in my guacamole, instead of lemon or lime juice.

I know! Gross? Some of you hate vinegar and I probably won't win you over. But I take after my grandmas. I love vinegar! Not just any vinegar, my favorite is raw apple cider vinegar like this. Mmmm. It's like tangy magic. Around here, it's a known fact that I'll stir some into my soup, pour a smidge into a smoothie, I like to add it to my banana bread for a buttermilky taste, and yes, it goes in our guac. I dare you to try it. It adds a new level of flavor, tanginess! So delicious.

Here are the other components of my perfect bowl of guacamole:
  • sea salt
  • minced garlic
  • chopped red onion
  • cilantro

What's your guacamole secret?

In other news, I've been getting so many requests from you guys about making memory verse cards for The 50 Promises! Thank you so much. You'll be happy to hear that I am working on getting the cards stocked in the shop as fast as I can! I'll keep you posted and let you know as soon as they are available. :)

This week I like:
1. Listening to the Sleepless in Seattle soundtrack on repeat.
2. That tomorrow the weather forecast for our town is a high of -8*. Brrr! Stay warm, neighbors!
3. Being safe. We had a scare while driving the icy country roads on our way to church on Sunday. Praise the Lord for His safekeeping.
4. The Endless Alphabet app. One of the few apps to keep her attention. Something that she'll come sit (and stay) on my lap for! We love to play this to keep her mind off growing molars. It's free for a limited time.
5. The John Piper Daily Devotional app. For the past few years I've read Spurgeon's Morning & Evening every day, but this year we've discovered this app and LOVE IT. It's really wonderful. The devotionals are short, sharp, and penetrating. I feel like I'm really learning new things, which is a feeling I miss. I recommend it. (Go get it! It's awesome!)
6. It's snowing and blowing this minute. School was 2 hours late because of the roads yesterday.. perhaps more school closings in the near future?? (I'm hoping so hard for this.)
7. Chicken thighs + roasted carrots & sweet potatoes. This meal, all the time.
8. (from Hadley) Monsters, Inc. Oranges. Hugs.
9. Warm banana bread for the cold, dark days. (see recipe below!)
10. Taxes are filed. New stocks bought. Lots of things to discuss at the dinner table.
11. Throwing on my clothes in front of the blasting space heater every morning.
12. NBC's Parenthood. I've been slowly making my way through old seasons of this show with our Amazon Prime. Does anyone know where I can find Season 4 for free?

Oh, dear. I feel like I'm always posting about banana bread. Here's the thing, I usually bake once a week, and 75% of the time I choose to make banana bread. So it's on my mind quite often. :) I love it so much that I worry if I make something else, I'll just end up wishing it were banana bread. Now you know. And you know that I've got plenty more banana bread posts in me.

This recipe is my favorite of the past year, but I tweaked it the other night. I added rice flour to the mix and reduced the coconut flour, making a taller loaf that is slightly more fluffy. That meant I could cut back on the eggs. I also omitted the coconut milk, because my batter looked wet enough without it. It came out luscious and nutty and just way too good. I kept cutting slivers away from the loaf, because I made myself stop after a couple pieces.. but I couldn't stop.

Gluten Free Banana Nut Bread
4 large ripe bananas, mashed
4 eggs
1/4 cup melted coconut oil (or butter)
1/3 cup honey (or raw/coconut sugar)
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup coconut flour
1/2 cup rice flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt, heaping
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

In a small pot, melt together the coconut oil and honey. Let cool for a minute. In a large bowl, combine mashed bananas, eggs, honey & oil mixture, and vanilla. Sift coconut flour into the bowl and add in remaining dry ingredients. Blend well. Scoop into a greased loaf pan and bake at 350* for 45 to 55 minutes.

p.s. Thanks to everyone who commented yesterday and gave me things to think about for the shop! You are so encouraging! Love you guys!

Miss Hadley in her Flip diaper, fall 2011

I get asked about cloth diapers allll the time. And I'm so happy to talk about them! Here's my answer. I think cloth diapers are...
no big deal. a pretty good investment. and cuuuuute.

My experience with them has been so great! I know that lots of people are putting cloth on their babies' bottoms nowadays and there's not much mystery left to it, but I wanted to write this post because this is one of the topics that I get questions about most frequently. And because I just think it's fun to talk about babies and their buns! Here are some of the questions I get asked about my diapers....

1. What brand do I use? Are you happy with them? We have Flip diapers and really like them. It's so simple. Just a one-size cover (with snaps, no pins) that you adjust as your baby grows, and a few choices for inserts. We have the stay-dry inserts. There are cheaper options than these, but we liked this system the best.
2. How many diapers do you have? We have 8 covers and 24 inserts. We bought 4 of these packs, if you're interested. I really like that you have the option of re-using the covers if they aren't dirty!
3. How often do I do diaper laundry? Ummm, right now it's about every 2 or 3 days. This has changed a lot since Hadley was teeny! It has varied from once a week to every other day. It depends on how often we re-use our covers before washing and if we're doubling-up on inserts (which I'll explain more later).
4. Where do you store dirty diapes until you're ready to do laundry? We bought this wet bag to store dirties. We hang it inside our basement door, which is where our washer and dryer are. (in the basement).
5. My diapers stink! Any advice? Yes! We had a stink last summer and got Funk Rock. It works. Also, my sister-in-law taught me the trick of putting in a couple big towels with my load of diapers so that the washer will use more water when rinsing.
6. Do you ever use disposables? Yep. We keep some disposables on hand for when we're going to be out and about, going to grandma's, or when we run out of clean cloth diapers. We also used disposables for the first 2 months of Hadley's life, because we were living at Camp Shetek and didn't have our own personal washer/dryer.
7. What about.... poop. If it's scrape-able or toss-able, take it to the toilet. If it's just from straight breast milk, it's water-soluble and will be fine in the washer. Wherever it ends up, it's going to be okay.
8. My diapers are stained! Don't worry, mine are too! When it's convenient, and I remember to do it, I put wet diapers outside to dry in the sun and they bleach like magic!
9. What about leaking issues? This could mean you need to adjust the size for your baby, or, in our case, we started doubling up on our inserts and that solved the problem right away! As Hadley has gotten older, we started laying two inserts inside the same cover, and I didn't need to change my babe every time I turned my head.
10. General thoughts/advice on cloth diapers? At first, when we put Hadley into her Flips, I hated it. I hated the hugeness on her bum and how it changed her shape. It just looked weird! Needless to say, after a few hours I was over it. She is adorable in her diapes! I think they are so helpful and cute. economical and clean. and not any more gross than changing a diaper that's not cloth.

Edited to add questions from the comments:

What's the monthly cost estimate for cloth diapering? What about special detergent? We spent around $200 on the diapers initially, and have been using them about 20 months now which = $10 per month so far, and obviously, it will be more cost-effective the longer we go. The diapers are still in great condition and will be used for more babies, so who knows how long we'll make that initial $200 last. I use the same detergent on the diapers that I use on everything we wash, so I don't have to buy anything extra. I use this jug of Charlie's Soap and it lasts forever.. like half a year at least.

Can you store a wet bag somewhere other than a basement?/Are they difficult to keep clean? Yes, but you might want to get a garbage can with a lid to store it in, just to prevent any smells taking over your house :) Our diapers come out of the wash really clean, but I do like to use Funk Rock once in awhile to deep clean and get rid of any lingering smell.

What do you guys know about cloth diapers that I don't know?

ps. Happy Birthday to my sister-in-law Audra, who loves to talk cloth diapers! This one's for you :)

I was tagged on instagram by the super fun Sheena Jibson (@thelittleredhouse) to play a game where you share a self-portrait and 5 things people don't know about you. I wanted to share my 5 with you, plus a few extras for fun. You guys know me pretty well. (How long have you been reading? I'm so curious!) So some of you might already know a couple of these things.

1. When I go to a movie, I play this game in my head where I try to guess who the composer is before I see the credits. (I love trivia.)
2. My baby was born at home.
3. I don't usually wear deodorant.
4. I really want to visit North and South Carolina.
5. I'm a nerd. I love Lord of the Rings and I still wear my retainer to bed every night.

Hi guys! Hope you're having a great weekend! Just wanted to stop in real quick this morning because I've been playing around and think I found a better way to get The 50 Promises list to you. The print was so tiny before! Here it is in a pdf for you to download and print. Please let me know if it works for you!

January 17, 2013
Guys, I'm still making sauerkraut! It's been over a year now and we're still going strong, so I think it's an established practice. And why not? It's easy, cheap, good for us, Hadley loves it, and I can't eat a hot dog without it anymore. I've made a complete 180. From being a ketchup-only-girl, I'm now a kraut-and-mustard-girl. What about you? Sauerkraut: love it, hate it, or never had it?

For Christmas, I got a real sauerkraut crock to pack my cabbage into. I already have my first batch going in it! You can find it here, although Grant found the same one cheaper at Ace Hardware. In a 2-gallon crock like this, we were able to fit 3 large heads of cabbage very easily. Next time we'll do 4.

Fresh sauerkraut really does have an awesome flavor. The sourness can be a great addition to your plate once you learn where to mix it in. If you haven't eaten it before, the next time you are having some kind of grilled meat or even a taco, throw a few bites of  'kraut on top and see if you don't think they are made for each other. I think it tastes best on a plate with a little meat and a little bit of sweet. Roasted chicken or a grilled hot dog + sweet squash + sauerkraut = my favorite meal. We also like it alongside our scrambled eggs.

This is my favorite store-bought sauerkraut, which we buy if my homemade batch isn't ready yet. If you want the health benefits of it, it's important to find a sauerkraut that is made using old-world methods (not pasteurized). The only ingredients should be cabbage, salt, and possibly water.
And here's my super simple method for making it, in case you want to try it for yourself....

Old-Fashioned Fresh Sauerkraut
tangy, crunchy, and super healthy / from The Nourishing Gourmet

5 pounds cabbage (about 2 medium or 1 large head)
3 1/2 Tablespoons sea salt (unrefined)

Make sure your prep area and dishes are very clean before you start. You'll need a crock like the one I have, or just a large glass bowl will do very nicely. (I used a big glass bowl before I got my crock)  You'll also need a plate or bowl that will fit snugly inside and something to weigh it down.

1. Using a food processor or a well-sharpened knife, shred cabbage. Place in a large bowl. Toss with the salt and cover with a kitchen towel. Leave for an hour or so to allow the salt to draw out the juices.
2. Using your hands, pound the cabbage down and release as much liquid as you can. I think of it as kneading- just turn the mound of cabbage over and pound down, continuing until it's well packed together and lots of juice has been squeezed out.
3. Transfer cabbage and juices to the bowl or crock you'll be fermenting in and pack down with a mallet. Place a clean plate on top and press down firmly, then weigh it down with another dish or a jar of water, or whatever you can find to serve as a weight. The liquid from the cabbage should rise to the top as you press down. You want the juices to cover the plate with room to spare. If the liquid hasn't risen above the plate within 12-24 hours, mix up some salt water (1 cup filtered water + 1 tsp. sea salt) and add as much as you need. Cover crock/bowl with a kitchen towel to protect from dust.
4. Each day, or every other day, remove the plate and rinse it. If you see any "scum" on the surface of the water you can remove it with a spoon. (You won't necessarily see any.) Let your sauerkraut ferment anywhere from 9 to 21 days. You can start sampling it to see when it reaches the depth of flavor that you like. How quickly it ferments will depend on the temperature of your house. At our house, in the dead of winter like we are now, I like mine to have a solid 3 weeks of fermentation. But you can stop the process whenever it tastes good to you.
5. Once it's "ripe" enough, I like to run it through my processor one more time before I bottle it in glass jars and store it in the fridge. (We like the texture of it when it's well-chopped.) It will keep for a lonnng time in the fridge. And then it's done!
And then we eat it with our scrambled eggs every morning!

Why is sauerkraut so good for you? When you lacto-ferment a vegetable (which is what we're doing to the cabbage when we make it into sauerkraut) it increases in vitamins, it becomes more digestible than a raw or cooked vegetable, and you get a ton of good bacteria when you eat it! So, triple bonus!

January 16, 2013

  1. Your response to 50 Promises! Thank you guys for being excited and jumping on this with me. How is #1 going? Is it memorized yet? My notecard is in my kitchen window :)
  2. A new project in progress... I'm making memory verse cards for a sweet mum in Brussels!
  3. Our Christmas decorations are still up. (!!!) For some random reason January 17th is our day to take them down. (tomorrow! oh noooo!)
  4. Ghee. Yummmmm. I've been dying to try this stuff for a long time because I've heard people rave about it and Grant put a jar of it in my stocking at Christmas! It's. so. good. I fry my eggs in it and they are insane. I even left a video review for them on amazon and got a $25 amazon gift card :) So now there are two more jars of ghee headed my way!
  5. Date planned for Friday night. Playdate planned for tomorrow at my house. I'm making lunch!
  6. Being busy. Lately every night as we head upstairs for bed, Grant and I say oh, wouldn't it be so nice if we didn't need sleep? At that point in the evening we both feel we could stay up all night and get things done and it would be so awesome! But of course we go to bed early, because that really is awesome. Anyway, my to do list is brimming. New things are coming at me left and right- I'm so thankful. Thank you guys who contact me with your fun orders and projects!!
  7. A new hat with a pom pom.
  8. Sense & Sensibility. I'm reading the iBooks version while I use the treadmill at the gym.
  9. How Hadley runs everywhere, sorts everything, stacks everything, sits at her desk to "work," and is blissed out when I mention getting a clementine from the fridge.
  10. That Grant's basketball season is slowing down.
  11. We're halfway through January!
  12. That it's Downton Abbey season. I love knowing I have an episode on my dvr to enjoy in the quiet evening. It's like dessert- for an hour.
  13. 8 degree weather. (aka staying inside and dressing in many layers)
  14. Tazo Passion tea. My friend served me this when I came to bring her dinner. Isn't she sweet?
  15. My sister-in-law's yummy handmade soap. Orange ginger!
  16. This soup. I've never been a huge fan of how chewy kale is- it takes so long for me to eat it because it's pretty tough stuff. But kale in soup... now that's smart. And soft. I like everything about this soup! I've devoted every lunch in January to it.

Creamy Sausage & Kale Soup
1 T. butter, ghee, or coconut oil
1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped red onion
1 tsp. sea salt
4 cups homemade chicken broth
1 or 2 cups cooked acorn squash
1 T. spicy mustard
1 bunch of kale, washed, stems removed, and torn into bite size pieces
1/2 lb. beef sausage or ground beef, or both
(I didn't have any authentic sausage so I used some ground beef and 2 of these)
cooked rice, optional
butter, ghee, or coconut oil for topping

I never measure when I make this soup, I just go with what my fridge shelves have to offer. Feel free to adjust things to taste!

Heat butter/ghee/oil in a saucepan over medium high heat. Saute onion until translucent, then add all other ingredients, except the rice. Turn heat to high, bring to a boil. Once it's boiling, turn it all the way down to simmer and put the lid on. Let simmer for at least 25 minutes, or until kale is soft, but you can let it go as long as you like! Stir in cooked rice at the end. Serve with an extra pat of butter or ghee on top.

January 14, 2013

Here we are, two weeks down in 2013. That means there are 50 weeks left! Last week I mentioned to you guys that God's promises were really on my heart for 2013. I can't stop thinking about it. I want to know them; off the top of my head, backwards and forwards, by heart. I want them to pop into my mind all throughout the day and to be the first thing I turn to when anxiety rises up in me (which is very, very often). I want to claim them! I've decided to make a plan to help me do this.

I've handpicked 50 of my favorite promises, straight out of His word. Full of things that He does/will do for us, things that we are given, things that happen every day that we don't even realize. One per week for the rest of the year. Each week I'm going to memorize one promise, write it on a notecard and place it by my sink to ponder while I'm washing dishes, talk about it with Grant, and watch how God is faithful to it. I hope to grow more peaceful, patient, and courageous by the end. Who wants to try with me? I'd love to have friends do it along with me- we can help each other be accountable! Just click over here to print your promises. Start verse #1 this week.

One of the most remarkable capacities of the human mind is the capacity to direct its own attention to something it chooses. We can pause and say to our minds, "Think about this, and not that." ... Have you been neglecting this great weapon in the arsenal of your war against sin? The Bible calls us again and again to use this remarkable gift. Let's take it out and shine it up and put it to use. - John Piper

I challenge you to a memory game with me.
50 promises, 50 weeks.

January 11, 2013
Yesterday I got to take some food to a friend who just had a baby! It was so fun. It's the kind of thing that I feel like I could do all the time, now that I've just got some practice. Do you ever do dinner deliveries? What do you like to make for them? I made rosemary chicken with garlic potatoes and carrots. I also packed a pineapple, some kiwi, and a jar of my cilantro rice salad, because I know she likes it. :) My mom always takes a hot pizza when she brings a meal to someone! I love that tradition.

I was so glad to get a chance to talk with my sweet friend. Connecting with brand new moms is one of my most favorite things. I crave it. I have such a heart for them! Any new mamas out there reading today? I just want them all to know that they're not alone. God is faithful. Don't lose hope, trust in Him, things will get better. The first couple months after my baby was born were tough. (of course/needless to say/duh/what did you expect?) The mental recovery took a long time. I don't think I had postpartum depression, but I do feel like I had a case of postpartum... despair.

Here's where I went wrong: I was not ready to do battle. Yes, I was exhausted, hormonal, nursing, and healing, all of which are simply going to be harder than you expect. (I was also away from home and without a true bathroom, which was also way harder than I expected.) But more than that, my mind was overcome. I wasn't fighting Satan for control of my thoughts. I didn't have peace. I felt so weak. The Enemy likes to H.I.T. us when we're down: when we're hungry, isolated, and tired is when we need to be especially watchful of his schemes... which is exactly what every new mom is, all the time! He'd love nothing more than to get her feeling like the change is too much, feeling hopeless, lonely, worried, bitter, empty, envious, scared, and misunderstood.

It took me a long time to feel like myself again, but the Lord broke through my perilous thoughts and brought peace. That time is so dear to me because when I think about it, I'm still amazed at how He sustained me through it. When I think how do I know that He is a faithful God? how has He been faithful to ME? I can look back to my first summer as a mom and see it firsthand. He alone upheld me.  One morning that summer, the Lord brought this passage to me. He used it to speak directly to my heart. I can remember it; a rare moment when my baby was sleeping, sitting alone at a table in the sun, bible open in front of me, tears coming down under my sunglasses as I read it. These are the verses that I claim and cling to.

When my soul was embittered,
when I was pricked in heart,
I was brutish and ignorant;
I was like a beast toward you.

Nevertheless, I am continually with you;
You hold my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will receive me to glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And there is nothing on earth
that I desire besides you.

My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.
psalm 73: 21-26

Dear new mom, if your flesh and heart are failing today, I understand. If you're feeling stressed out and trying so desperately to keep up appearances, I get it. I'm praying for you! If you are hungry, isolated, and tired, fight for your thoughts! Trust in the Lord and let Him be your strength!

January 8, 2013

Does anyone else feel like it's going to be the beginning of January forever?

I struggle with what to do with this stretch of the year. It's hard to be excited about the bleak winter ahead... it's hard to pick up where I was before the holidays. I was plodding along just fine in the fall, then the buzz of the holidays came and swept me up in the excitement, and now I'm figuring out how to begin doing normal life again (without something big and hopeful like Christmas break on the horizon). I think that must be the nature of January. Time to shake myself up a little and get a new plan. I'm going to need a plan to be resilient through the winter!

our desktop, with the first memory verse for 2013
My course of action so far has been..
1. God's promises. This is the main thing the Lord has laid on my heart for 2013. To know, claim, and believe His promises more firmly than I've done before. For my faith to increase in fullness, constancy, simplicity. I'm working my way through a collection of biblical promises, picking one promise per week to hide in my heart and watch how God is faithful to it.

2. Fighting for my thoughts with the sword of the Spirit. Grant and I are memorizing the fighter verses this year. It's a super simple tool. Just a list of scriptures to memorize that are useful for fighting against temptation, doubt, anxiety, and any other schemes of the Enemy.

3. Enjoying the things that need to be done. Delighting in everyday jobs. Working hard (and hopefully cheerfully) at the same old things I do all the time. Realizing that the sink of dishes I wish I didn't have to wash is the same sink that I, in reality, like to stand at and make things clean. Remembering that I would be sad if I didn't have responsibilities and how satisfying it is to do a job.

One of the responsibilities I'm especially glad about is simply: meals. They have to be made and cleaned up (or at least thought about) every day, 3 times a day. I like this. It's a constant that keeps me from getting too lazy or too busy. You have to get up off the couch and get something to eat. Or, you have to stop working on that stuff and get something to eat. It's nice, isn't it? And really, I don't think there's a more satisfying feeling than eating a good meal and getting it all cleared away at the end. Here's one of the meals that is in regular rotation at our house. Nothing special, but it's easy to love and perfect as leftovers.

 Everyday Stir Fry
everybody makes stir fry their way, this is ours.

2 lbs. boneless skinless chicken thighs,
fat trimmed and cut into large pieces
2 T. olive or coconut oil
sea salt
4 cloves minced garlic or more
veggies of choice/whatever is in season:
5 carrots, peeled and chopped into match-sticks
1 or 2 zucchini, chopped
handful of asparagus spears, chopped
handful of chopped broccoli or cauliflower
optional: cooked rice to stir in or serve alongside

1) Heat oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium high heat. Add chicken to hot pan and brown on both sides. Add in carrots first if you need more time to chop the other vegetables (they take the longest to cook) and toss with chicken. 2) Add remaining veggies and stir well, season generously with salt. Let everything sit and cook, without stirring, for a little while. 3) Continue cooking, switching between sitting and stirring, until meat is cooked through and vegetables are as soft/crisp/crusty as you like. 4. Add garlic in the last few minutes of cooking, as well as cooked rice (if you're using it). Finish with a final sprinkle of sea salt and serve hot.

Having a week of being together and waking up at the same time and eating every meal side-by-side... I love it. It's one of my favorite things. We kicked off our holidays with a date! We went to The Hobbit and grocery shopping. Then we had a day of getting the house ready, deep cleaning the kitchen and even clearing out the fridge. It felt so nice. Sunday night we caroled around town with the Harms clan. This year, my father-in-law rented a school bus for us all to pile in together! Christmas Eve we spent with the Harms family with games and Christmas tacos. Christmas Day we celebrated at home just us 3, we had a grand breakfast and opened gifts and recorded 2012 events in our little black book, and slept by the tree. Then a day later we traveled to Nebraska to celebrate with my family and do lots of shopping and game-playing.

1. singing by the tree at the Harms Christmas | Hadley and I bundled up for caroling
2. breakfast on Christmas Day | the boys playing one last game of Fumble-rooski at the farm
3. a long, long table of taco feasting on Christmas Eve | seeing The Hobbit on my date with Grant
4. watching old family slides on the big screen | a snowy drive to Nebraska for more Christmasing
5. my childhood stocking | a pretty package from my friend Amanda in England
6. Mom's monkey bread | a still-decorated, well-heated home (note the extra heater under the table)

The food (a random assortment of things we ate over the holidays): chicken soup, Christmas tacos, cranberry pecan cake, these chocolate chip cookies, scrambled eggs, sausage, & roasted zucchini, fresh orange juice, wassail, burgers, guacamole, clementines...

Some of the gifts we received:
Grant- the Amplifiear, Dangerous Journey, vintage leather duffel bag, new clothes, money toward a new sound system
Me- handmade soap and bag from a sister, curling wand, a pretty white robe, expensive shampoo, a real crock for making my sauerkraut, new underwear, and It's A Wonderful Life
Hadley- a wooden mixer, pounding block, and puzzle, new boots and books, a puppy (not a real one), and a miniature foosball table

What did you get for Christmas?

Here are my resolutions for 2013.

1. Learn to curl my hair. With the help of the curling wand I got from my twin sister for Christmas! She's a hair stylist and she bought me the same one that she used on clients. It's this one.
2. Learn to blog faster.
3. Be peaceful.
4. Ephesians 4:31-32. Here's the checklist: Get rid of all bitterness, anger, and slander. Be kind, be tenderhearted, forgive.

Practicing resolution #1. I usually give up in frustration after about 5 curls with a curling iron, but I was able to finish my whole head without any moments of despair or frizzy crimped ends! I love this new curling wand.

Any resolutions you're making this year?
Today is back to work day here. Grant is gone and reality is settling in, but it still feels pretty holidayish because we had some tiny snowflakes this morning and all of our decorations are still up. Which is where they'll be staying for awhile!

2012 is in the books and it's time to start playing life in 2013. I wonder what's ahead for us this round. Grant and I couldn't fall asleep the other night because we just wanted to talk and talk about possibilities for us. Places and jobs and potentials and dreams. And of course, we had our annual look over the budget meeting on the couch, which I actually look forward to every year! We go through and see where we over-budgeted or under-budgeted and make changes/goals for the year ahead. This year we paid off the school loan from Grant getting his masters!! So that's pretty fun.

Speaking of fun, let's start reviewing the holidays! Did you and yours play any good games over the holidays? I wanted to share some our holiday gaming with you today!
This was a new one for me and I really liked it! Contemplative and relaxing.
Great for a mixed group of cousins, aunts, and uncles.
One of my faves! I never win, but I love word games.
Pictionary
Rook
Family Trivia
Wii Bowling
Jenga
With my side of the family we play games to win gift cards as our "stocking stuffers." This year's first game was a homemade family trivia game from Mom. Then wii bowled and destroyed the Jenga tower, which the boys were crazy good at. And for the last event of the stocking tournament we teamed up with our spouse for couples' Password. I had almost forgotten about this game and it is so great! Simple, and perfect to play with someone who knows how your mind works. Grant and I got hooked.

We have a vintage version of it in our game cupboard that we've been ignoring until now. Since we got home from Christmas in Nebraska we've been playing it every night at the dinner table.

Grant and I also bought The Room to play together on the iPad over Christmas break. Have you heard of it yet? It was awarded game of the year by the App Store. It's amazing! Puzzles and patterns and codes and lots of fun to play. If you liked Myst, you'll love this simplified and sophisticated challenge. We just finished it last night!

Sadly, this year there wasn't time to play my favorite of all favorites: Acquire. Lots of strategy and money in this one. Something to look forward to for next year!

What did you and your family play this year?

Helloooo! So good to see you! And Happy New Year, friends! I hope your holidays were wonderful and that you've had a sweet break from regular life. I know we have. I'll share some highlights soon. Today is the last day of Christmas vacation at our house, so I just wanted to say a quick hello and hi. I need to make the most of every moment before I have to start sharing my husband with the world again. Also, I'm working on some layout changes and giving this place a freshening up for 2013. What do you think? I hope it feels easy and roomy and friendly.  More soon, see you tomorrow!

about this blog

Hello, I'm Summer. A people-loving introvert whose hope and life is in Jesus. His promises are my passion and my ministry is homelife. This blog is a place for me to write about everyday things. Especially food. My favorite thing to do is sit around a table, lingering over a long meal with good conversation. I live with my husband and our 2 littles. We like blizzards, thrifting, grammar, guacamole, cheerful hearts, nice manners, good movies, and making simple, real, nutrient-dense food.
